When its ice melts, Greenland’s interior will become a vast inland sea…
Today is day 19 of the NACIS 30-day Map Challenge, with the theme Islands.
It’s a perfect time to debut this map of one of the world’s largest islands, set far in the future.
This hidden geography is fascinating. The landforms that emerge from a changing climate, even when horrifying, are amazing to see.
I’ve been criticized for this one, specifically for not taking into account isostatic rebound, the rising up of land that has been pressed down by the weight of miles of ice. It’s a fair criticism, but like all my other sea level rise maps, this is a simplistic model. In addition to not taking the rebound of land mass into account, I always use the 66m sea level rise number. This elevation will always be inaccurate because of local geographies, tidal actions, and gravity. The actual level will vary from place to place; sea level rise is very localized.
But for this model, does it really matter? The disaster to humanity and the world is clear. The complete melting of the ice caps is in the far-distant future. A few meters more or less is irrelevant.
