Palm Springs Bay

You thought you were safe in your desert resort?

As the oceans rise, the Gulf of California will inundate the Imperial Valley, and finally reach its ultimate level in the Coachella Valley. I imagine there will be far fewer golf courses, but hey, plenty of opportunities for yacht moorage!

This map has been updated!

This is the sixth in a series of extreme sea level rise maps.

See the original–Burrito Justice’s map of San Francisco.

Btw, I’m a local–I graduated from Indio High School.

This will happen someday, but not in our lifetimes. Some who have dared to speculate on a timeline have given themselves plenty of space for error in their predictions–one estimate says anywhere from 1,000 to 10,000 years. Whatever the time frame, anthropogenic climate change is a fact–humans are speeding up this process.

For all of these maps, I am not portraying any sea level higher than what is possible. The IPCC has estimated that the total rise would be about 215 feet.

It is not the ice melting, it is the expansion of the volume of the ocean due to the rising temperature.

Well, now that a shelves are falling off glaciers – and they have receded 100’s of feet, and that a cruise ship has navigated what – 50 years ago – was a frozen Arctic, it definitely IS glacial melting much more than the also true increase in water volume due to warming. Sun shines more hotly, water warms = less ice, more water. Scientists say it is no longer reversible.
